Sexual Biology and Mating Behaviour in Decapod Crustaceans: A Case Study with Coral Reef Dwelling Caridean Shrimps

چکیده

Crustaceans have diversified sexual systems, incorporating various reproductive modalities such as gonochorism and a wide variety of hermaphroditism. In particular, the coral reef- dwelling caridean shrimps, living in symbiosis with other marine invertebrates, developed unusual systems that given origin to range social including highly advanced eusociality. Protandric hermaphroditism, common among has also reached unique condition, known protandric simultaneous genus, Lysmata. Similarly, mating shrimps are diverse divergent. addition, their occurrence reef is correlated life style adaptations commensal association invertebrates. Other ecological factors like predation risk from outside host animals differences characteristics may be driving forces determining associations. Furthermore, transition monogamy under conditions symbiotic led complex community several synalpheid shrimps. Understandably, existence these dependence on eco- prevalent biota.

Digital electromagnetic telemetry system for studying behaviour of decapod crustaceans.

1 year and the receiving system batteries are replaced by divers at intervals of up to 4 weeks. In field tests, crab (Cancer pagurus L.) and lobster (Homarus gammarus (L.)) activity was monitored at an artificial reef for 14 months. Examples of the type of information acquired are presented to illustrate the capabilities of the system and potential applications are discussed. Limitations of dig...

Comparative species richness in fluctuating and constant environments: coral-associated decapod crustaceans.

The number of decapod species associated with the coral Pocillopora damicornis is compared between two regions on the Pacific coast of Panama which are of the same geologic age but differ in environmental characteristics. The relationship between number of species and coral head size does not differ between the two regions but species composition among coral heads is more variable in the fluctu...

Mating systems in caridean shrimp (Decapoda: Caridea) and their evolutionary consequences for sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology

In this paper we review functional and evolutionary relationships among mating systems of caridean shrimp and specific traits such as general biology/ecology, sexual systems, behavior and morphology. Four mating systems are described based on reports from available literature, and a fifth system is recognized but published information is insufficient to describe it in detail. ‘Monogamy’ occurs ...
